The promise A scholarship is a merit-based initiative that offers financial support to high school students who intend to enroll in one of the state’s public or independent 2- or 4-year institutions in West Virginia.

Applicants who demonstrate academic excellence are provided with a scholarship of up to $5,500 annually to cover tuition and other related fees. This financial aid helps lessen financial worries and enables students to focus on their studies, adversely leading to fulfilling academic and career goals. Each year, The Promise Scholarship supports up to 100 students who aspire to fulfill their academic and career goals despite diverse oppositions.

The application deadline for the Promise Scholarship has been extended to September 1, 2024, due to the delayed FAGSA launch. Students who intend to apply for the Premise Scholarship should optimize this opportunity by applying now!

Eligibility and Requirements

Students who intend to apply for a Promise scholarship are expected to adhere strictly to certain rules spelled out by the scholarship provider. The rules for this scholarship program are outlined below:

  • Candidates must complete all requirements for high school graduation at a West Virginia public or private school.
  • Applicants must obtain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.75 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Must have resided in West Virginia for twelve consecutive months before the Promise application date. There are exceptions for members of the Armed Services or military dependents.
  • A student must have completed at least half of the credits needed for high school graduation through attendance in an authorized private or public high school in West Virginia.
  • It is also mandatory that you submit your academic transcripts or grade reports to be considered eligible for this scholarship program. Unless specified otherwise by the scholarship provider, grade report forms are not permitted.
  • Lastly, the applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student in a private or public high school in the state of West Virginia.

Applicants are encouraged to adhere strictly to the aforementioned criteria so as not to jeopardize their chances of getting the Promise Scholarship. Also, ensure to send in your applications and FAFSA competition form before the extended deadline. Applications that are submitted after the specified deadline for the Promise scholarship will not be considered.

How do I check my Application status?

Meanwhile, to check your application status, visit the official scholarship portal, and log into your WVSAM account. Once you’ve successfully logged in, click your confirmation number under ‘My Applications’. Your application status will be displayed on your screen.

How do I know if my Application has been received?

Students who have successfully submitted their application; will receive a confirmation email that signifies that the application has been received by the scholarship provider. Also, under ‘My Applications’, your WVSAM will display your submitted applications.

Can I transfer to my institution using my Promise Scholarship?

Yes, you can! However, you are expected to transfer to an institution under the eligible institution of the Promise scholarship.  Students who wish to transfer to another institution should contact the scholarship administrator directly for information about the transfer process.
