History of Enugu State

The name of the state Enugu was derived from the capital city, Enugu. The word Enugu is pronounced “Enu Ugwu” which means “the top of the hill”. When the first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1900s led by a British mining engineer by the name of Albert Kitson, in his quest for silver, he found coal in the Udi Ridge. This is why the state is known as the coal city state. At that time, the Colonial Governor of Nigeria Fredrick Lugard took great interest in the discovery, and by 1914 the first shipment of coal was made to Britain.

Afterward, mining activities increased in the area and Foreign businesses began to move into Enugu, Enugu acquired township status in 1917 and became strategic to British interest. From Enugu, the British administration was able to spread its influence over the Southern Province of Nigeria. Enugu was created in 1991 from the eastern two-thirds of Anambra state.
